UPS AND DOWNS
In this photo exploration, I resonated with insights from photo-theorists Hilde Van Gelder and Helen Westgeest. Their work, ‘Photography Theory in Historical Perspective: Case Studies from Contemporary Art,’ highlights the transformative power of high-speed flash photography as an ‘accessory that manipulates time,' introducing a new visual domain (77). My photos, especially those capturing fleeting paths of water-filled balloons, marbles, and paper balls, aim to expand on this theory. I suggest a parallel between these object oscillations and life's metaphorical ‘ups and downs.’ By freezing these objects in time, my work reveals the hidden beauty in these passing states, prompting viewers to reflect on the aesthetic and symbolic nuances of ephemerality and continuous movement.
