Pretext (noun):

  1. A false or misleading reason or excuse is given to conceal one's true motives, intentions, or actions.

  2. An alleged purpose or justification that is used to provide a seemingly legitimate explanation for an action or decision, often when the true reason is different or hidden.

Example in a sentence: "He used a minor disagreement as a pretext to avoid attending the meeting, when in reality, he simply didn't want to participate."
