This telephone never rings

This was my parent’s telephone. Like many of their things, it travelled around the house, from the kitchen to the TV room, the basement, and finally to a box filled with Christmas decorations. I remember the sound it made when it rang. I remember the sound it made as you turned the dial when placing a call and the weight of the receiver on your shoulder when you needed your hands free to write something down or stir something on the stove. I also vividly remember my mother leaning against the counter while engrossed in a phone conversation. Over time, this phone was replaced by push-button and cordless telephones. Those newer phones would often break or run out of battery, but this particular phone endured long past the point where it was still needed. Now, it sits silent, no longer ringing or calling me or anyone else.
